Art of Trio

New arrangements of early recordings from the RTE and Traditional Irish Music Archives in Dublin draw on the fiddle music of Theresa Kavanagh’s home in North West Donegal and in particular the playing of Con and Frank Cassidy. Three ballads sung by Luke and new tunes from across the Atlantic in Nova Scotia. Mike Galvin’s 1973 Les Paul custom guitar featured throughout lends a subtle and contemporary feel that departs from the rhythmically driven guitar style that has come to define Irish music in recent.

This is a thoughtful and provocative album combining beautifully crafted arrangements with performances from all three players that are outstanding in their own right. Daniels recovers much of the finesse of his early recordings and his reach within the Irish tradition continues to push it forward, albeit through a smaller ensemble. It is the original source material though, meticulously researched, is held up as star and purpose for this record.

Theresa Kavanagh’s family moved back to Donegal from Glasgow when she was ten years old; an environment that enabled her to learn from some of the giants of the Donegal fiddle tradition. The late Pronsias O' Maonaigh (Francie Mooney, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Seamus Gibson and Martin McGinley were all mentors growing up in the heart of the Donegal Gaeltacht. Theresa is a natural talent and has a First Class Honours Degree in Music from the University of Ulster. She has two Ulster fiddle championship titles and has played formally (and informally) with some of the stars of the Irish music world. She was recently asked by Tommy People’s to perform with him at a concert to mark his appointment as Traditional Musician In Residence at The Balor Arts Centre in Co Donegal.
