Storytelling

Project with Taffy Thomas MBE

The music and storytelling traditions of England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Mann are distinctive voices in the cultural tapestry of the islands of Britain and Ireland. Drawing on Oral traditions that are both historical and contemporary, this project explored the distinctive expressions and the shared sources of the cultural communities of these islands through multimedia and artistic collaboration. Remembering the past, recognising the present, and sensing the future.

Traditional tales belong to the oral traditions of storytelling and were handed down by word of mouth through successive generations and across different cultures. These tales were important carriers of culture, since they reflected the culture, knowledge, wisdom, social practices and beliefs of the people who first told them. Such tales, whether folk or fairy tales, myths, legends or fables, have survived not only because they entertain and inspire, but because they embody emotional and spiritual truths about mankind. While Celtic traditions in and around the UK have their own styles and voices of traditional story language, there is much overlap between them.
